1984 Waltz

Halle Bruntmeyer

IGNOC
When the trees don’t shake in the wind anymore
When the fish don’t swim in the seas
When you are told what to think
And thought is worse than deed

Will you be my St. Martin’s will you be my Old Bailey
Will you be my St. Clements maybe, maybe, maybe

When the candle comes to light you to bed
When the children send their parents away
When the chopper comes to chop of your head
When they hear everything you say

Will you send me three farthings?
Will you give me your lemons and oranges?
Will you pay me? Say the bells
But beauty is all she sells

It was only a hopeless fancy
It passed like an April day
But a look and word and the dreams they stirred
They have stolen my heart away

They say that time heals all things
They say you can always forget;
But the smiles and the tears, across the years
They twist my heartstrings yet

Under the spreading chestnut tree
There lie they and here lie we
I sold you and you sold me
Under the spreading chestnut tree

When I get rich say the bells of Shoreditch
To the future or to the past
To a time when thought was free
The paint, the whiteness, like a mask

To a time when truth exists and
what is done cannot be undone
Two and two make five
I understand how i do not understand why

They’ll always shoot you in the back or neck
Top hats, chocolate, rainwater and rose
Freedom is the freedom to say 2 + 2 is 4
When men are different and do not live alone

If there is hope, it is in the paroles
When there is always the razor blade
Ignorance is strength
When the longed for bullet enters your brain

God is power
War is peace
Freedom is slavery
